City of Gdansk
General information
Gdansk (www.gdansk.pl) is located on the Baltic Sea coast in the northern part of Poland. The city is renowned for its 1000 year-long history, picturesque Old Town and beautiful surroundings with many lakes and hills. A new era in Poland's history started in Gdansk in 1980 with the establishment of the "Solidarity" movement under the leadership of Lech Walesa.
Ten kilometers from Gdansk is the old Baltic resort of Sopot (www.sopot.pl) with wide sandy beaches and the longest wooden pier in Europe, and 10 km further up the coast is the modern city of Gdynia (www.gdynia.pl), famous for tall ships parades and cruise port.
Gdansk, Sopot, and Gdynia have become known as the TriCity.
Public transport
The public transport (trams, buses, local train) and taxis are currently very cheap in Poland and provide easy and safe ways of transportation.
Weather
Gdansk is fortunate to have warm but not hot summers with average temperature for August at 17.1°C (75°F). However, in late summer evening temperatures may drop to 10-12°C.
